AI can not make art.
Art at it's core is about the human experience. Something about a moment, an idea, or feeling is captured by the artist through their own lense. The translation process through the medium itself also coalesces with the artist's intention. Then another layer of translation as the observer of said art is engaging with the work on their own. Through their own lense. This makes it possible to communicate with people over a hypothetically infinite amount of time and space. It "resonates" with people because art captures energy. It is more than the sum of it's parts.
Art is magical and is uniquely human. AI does not have the human experience. The issue is NOT if AI can fool a human into thinking another human made the work... although there are concerns there too. The issue is that art is so devalued by people today that individuals think they are entitled to having art for free. Art is product they see and enjoy on instagram or some other site and then 'like'. They got all the enjoyment out of it and if the artist is lucky they'll get a 'follow' so the artist has another chance down the line to try and sell them something. These consumers will accept cheap imitations and rob artists while doing it. 'Scraping' the labors of artists is theft, make no mistake about that. To the people using generative AI, it's the 'same thing'. But I have to emphatically disagre. Seeing what someone else creates is an opportunity to be intrigued, challenged by the work, to engage with it. AI just spits out something it 'thinks' you want to see.
I do not want to have a machine pretend to be human. I do not want to be incepted by machines who pump out endless filler with no soul. Art is not just some product to be manufactured at the lowest cost for the largest audience. Art is an element of our cultures and should be valued globally. What an aweful, souless, sad state of affairs it is that humans are selling themselves out so quickly and thoroughly to slop in a trough.
